Do I need endorsements to go along with my commercial drivers licence (CDL)?

The Air Brake and Combination Vehicle endorsements are the only two required to obtain a bare CDL to drive a commercial tractor trailer set-up.

The other endorsements are required for specialty type equipment operations. You can see further explanation of these endorsements below.

T – Double/Triple Trailers (written test only)

The T endorsement allows the commercial driver (CDL holder) legally operate double and triple trailer combinations.

P – Passenger (written and skills tests)

The P endorsement is required for commercial vehicles transporting 16 or more passengers. If you plan to operate a bus, you will be required to obtain this endorsement.

N – Tank Vehicle (written test only)

The N endorsement is required for drivers operating a tank type vehicle.

H – Hazardous Materials (written test only)

The H endorsement is required for commercial drivers (CDL holders) operating commercial vehicles transporting Hazardous Materials. A FBI background check will be required before the endorsement. will be issued.

X – Combination of Tank Vehicle and Hazardous Materials

The X endorsement allows the commercial driver (CDL holder) to legally transport Hazardous Materials, as well as operate a tank trailer. This endorsement requires additional fees as well as an FBI background check.

As you can see, you will have far more career opportunities by obtaining the above endorsements A bare CDL alone may work well for many commercial drivers. Some carriers may require certain endorsements prior to employment.

Of course you can always use the free CDL practice exams to help prepare you for the written test portion of these endorsements as well as the general knowledge written test.
