5 rules for surviving winter roads as truck driver

1- In slippery conditions slow down and triple your following distance.
2- It can be hard to get rolling from a stop so keep your truck rolling to avoid accordion effect.
3- Your traction is critical, so avoid sudden acceleration and braking.
4- Look well ahead and adjust to potential hazards.
5- Just like street signs, be watchful of slick driving surface signs,,, lack of spray from other vehicles tires, ice on mirrors and loss of traction from others.

Do I need endorsements to go along with my commercial drivers licence (CDL)?

The Air Brake and Combination Vehicle endorsements are the only two required to obtain a bare CDL to drive a commercial tractor trailer set-up.

The other endorsements are required for specialty type equipment operations. You can see further explanation of these endorsements below.

T – Double/Triple Trailers (written test only)

The T endorsement allows the commercial driver (CDL holder) legally operate double and triple trailer combinations.

P – Passenger (written and skills tests)

The P endorsement is required for commercial vehicles transporting 16 or more passengers. If you plan to operate a bus, you will be required to obtain this endorsement.

N – Tank Vehicle (written test only)

The N endorsement is required for drivers operating a tank type vehicle.

H – Hazardous Materials (written test only)

The H endorsement is required for commercial drivers (CDL holders) operating commercial vehicles transporting Hazardous Materials. A FBI background check will be required before the endorsement. will be issued.

X – Combination of Tank Vehicle and Hazardous Materials

The X endorsement allows the commercial driver (CDL holder) to legally transport Hazardous Materials, as well as operate a tank trailer. This endorsement requires additional fees as well as an FBI background check.

As you can see, you will have far more career opportunities by obtaining the above endorsements A bare CDL alone may work well for many commercial drivers. Some carriers may require certain endorsements prior to employment.

Of course you can always use the free CDL practice exams to help prepare you for the written test portion of these endorsements as well as the general knowledge written test.

Trucking job offer was scam, veteran driver says

A veteran trucker was victimized by a trucking job scam that police say started with a classified ad similar to “work at home” scams.

Gary Brechka noticed empty desks and a lack of people and office furniture at the motor carrier’s Kissimmee, FL, office when he visited for an interview in late September. There were no phones.

A single paper sign with “Intrinsic Distribution” was taped to the wall. No documents at the job interview site bore the supposed motor carrier’s name.

Brechka was hired to be a truck driver by a man who went by the name Adam Redwine. Redwine told Brechka he’d hear back in five to six weeks, and would begin working for “$19 to $24 hourly,” according to a classified ad placed by the company.

Oh, and one more thing: Brechka and the other truckers would need to submit $50 for a drug test and background check.

“If they didn’t pay it, they wouldn’t be hiring,” Brechka recalled.

Some driver-applicants left the office when they heard about the $50 fee, but Brechka paid in cash and later found the office vacant. His voice messages went unreturned. A search of FMCSA’s website reveals no records matching the carrier’s supposed name.

This is just a friendly reminder that many people will take advantage of those that are down on their luck. Check out all leads before giving a possible employer any personal information. Also get information from established web sites (like www,cdl101weekly.com) and from established carriers.
